“6 Questions With…” is an opportunity for women and girls everywhere to share something about their passions and lives. (It’s also a fantastic excuse for me to be really nosey and learn more about the incredible women I admire.)
This week I’m putting Liza Proch (pronounced like ‘approach’) in the hot seat. The second Texan to be interviewed for 6 Questions With, Liza is an amazing artist both visually and musically. Her Instagram feed is filled with amazing artwork as well as timelapse videos showing the love and work that goes into each piece. When she’s not having fun with paint, she can be found creating music with her brothers. Ghosts was quite possibly my song of 2019! Liza’s vocals on it gave me chills! However, the most important thing about Liza is that she’s also open about her faith. When you have a following of over 5,000 people, that’s not a small thing to be open about. So, of course, we had to get her on FC. I’ll leave the rest of the introductions to Liza Proch…
1) Tell us a little bit about yourself and where you come from. Paint a picture of yourself.
Hey! My name is Liza Proch, a Texas local and avid coffee drinker. With a love for rich colours and art that speaks for itself, I’ve grown up in an environment of creativity. I’ve been sketching, painting, or creating something ever since I can remember, and along the way, I’ve learned that art is a beautiful process. Not just the finished product when we can look back and realize “wow! I like that!”, but in the beginning stages as well, when brush meets canvas. I think God puts a little spark of creativity in every person, whether you’re in the studio, the kitchen, or the backyard, and through my work I hope to inspire you to make beautiful things and resist the fear of failure or insecurity. When I’m not painting, I tour the country with my band Willow City and was recently featured on Nickelodeon’s new show America’s Most Musical Family and Texas Country Reporter with my family.
2) I discovered you and your Insta account via being introduced to your band Willow City via GirlDefined. How did you get to know Bethany and Kirstin?
My family has known Bethany and Kristen’s family for almost ten years, when we went to the same church together. We hit it off right away, and have been friends ever since! Their family is such a witness for Christ, and it’s been so amazing to watch their ministry grow immensely!
3) You never seem to stop! How do you balance your jobs and responsibilities?
This is a great question and something that I’m always trying to figure out. In our culture, we’re encouraged to always be hustling, working, striving for “success”. Even though hustling and working hard are really great things, God also calls us to rest. Setting aside time to spend specifically in God’s Word, or taking time to be with friends is a great way to make yourself slow down. Honestly, I’m still figuring out the whole balance thing! I’m learning it’s all about boundaries and keeping yourself in check.
4) You’re open about your faith online but Willow City isn’t an overt worship band. Where do you find the balance of being open about your faith without pushing it on your audience?
As Willow City has grown and expanded, we’ve always been evaluating the direction we’re going. My brothers and I are passionate about spreading the love of Jesus to everyone and inspiring others to use their gifts or talents to honour God. For us, being a “worship band” would get us stuck in a category that would limit our reach, and the people we come into contact with. We love that no matter where we go or what venue we play, we get to share Jesus with everyone.
5) As a girl with three brothers, how has living with them shaped your understanding of what it means to be a woman?
I’m so grateful for my three amazing brothers. I get a lot of comments or questions about being the only girl, and I have to say it’s been one of the most growing, amazing, stretching things in my life. Just like any relationship, it takes work to have good communication and strong ties, and as the only girl, I’ve found that I can have a huge influence and impact on the guys around me. I’m learning that confidence and respect are extremely important in any relationship, and it’s helped me grow into a stronger person.
6) At Finding Chaya, we love lesser-known Bible characters. Have you got a favourite biblical character who isn’t well-known?
I love the more obscure people in the Bible, the ones who don’t ever really take the spotlight. One of these is Beniah, one of King David’s mighty men. This guy was like Superman, always putting others first and never taking the glory for himself, always courageous, never shirking responsibility. One of my favourite Bible characters.
